Styling, tuning & modified cars at the Thailand International Motor Expo 2009, Bangkok
The 26th Thailand International Motor Expo 2009 ended on Sunday evening after eleven busy days at Impact Arena in Muang Thong Thani and was judged an all-round success, a real shot in the arm for the Thai car industry as more than 25,000 new cars and light commercial vehicles were ordered during the show. I'm back the very end of its run, the final day seeing the crowds peak as almost a fifth of the show's sales are booked on this day. There is more than just the myriad of OEM and trade stands in the Challenger Hall as outside enthusiasts gather for owners' get-togethers and modified, tuned and customised cars create mini light shows while pumping out sounds through a mass of speakers. Outside the confines of the Challenger Hall there has been plenty of activity going on with different brand's owners' clubs rolling into one of the paved carparks each day. These have included Honda, Toyota, BMW and Mitsubishi with models of all ages, modifications and shapes taking part. The entire show ground has been a non-stop hive of activity, I venture round it on my second visit, and the asphalt is packed with wildly customised cars, pick-ups and even minivans, boasting decibel-pounding sound systems, elaborate and glittering paint finishes, and every available surface seemingly festooned with all manner of flashing lights. Many are brightly lit up underneath or inside the engine bay, while one or two feature a mobile disco going on inside. The many, noisy stage shows see the pretties strut their stuff to the delight of the crowd.
